Back-to-school season is here, and one of the best weekends to shop is almost here! New Mexico’s annual Tax-Free Weekend is a great opportunity for families to save money while preparing for the new school year.

📅 2026 Tax-Free Weekend Dates

Friday, July 31 through Sunday, August 2, 2026

During these three days, shoppers can purchase qualifying back-to-school items without paying New Mexico’s gross receipts tax.

Qualifying Tax-Free Items Include:

  • 👕 Clothing and shoes priced under $100 per item
  • 🎒 Bookbags and backpacks under $100
  • ✏️ School supplies under $30 per item
  • 💻 Computers and tablets up to $1,000
  • 🖥️ Computer accessories up to $500
  • 🧮 Handheld calculators under $200

Shop Local!

While the big-box stores will be busy, don’t forget about Albuquerque’s locally owned boutiques, children’s clothing stores, and neighborhood businesses. Shopping local keeps dollars in our community while helping small businesses thrive.

Free Back-to-School Resources in Albuquerque

Many local organizations also help families get ready for the school year with free supplies, clothing, and community events.

Some great resources include:

  • ✂️ Kutz 4 Kidz – Known for its annual community event offering free haircuts, backpacks, and school supplies for students.
  • 👕 Locker #505: Students Clothing Bank – Provides school clothing and essential items for eligible K-12 students.
  • 🎒 APS Community Clothing Bank and School Supply Barn – Helps APS students with clothing, shoes, and school supplies through referrals from their schools.

Many community organizations announce their giveaway dates shortly before the school year begins, so it’s a good idea to follow them or contact them directly for the latest schedules.

More Than Shopping—It’s About Community

One of the things I love most about Albuquerque is how our community comes together to support local families. Whether you’re taking advantage of Tax-Free Weekend, donating supplies, or participating in a community giveaway, every little bit helps students start the school year with confidence.

And if you’re new to Albuquerque or thinking about making a move, this is just one more example of the amazing community spirit you’ll find here.

If you’re looking for a home in a neighborhood that fits your family’s lifestyle, I’d love to help. Let’s find the perfect place to call home before the school year begins!
